Peace Vigil In Manchester
“My dear friends,
The purpose of doing demonstrations is to fulfil the Guru His Holiness the Dalai Lama's Holy wishes, this Guru Yoga practice is the path to enlightenment for the benefit of sentient beings.
It is also important to repay the kindness of the Tibetan people, who have preserved the complete Buddha Dharma, not only Vajrayana but the whole path, they have preserved all the teachings for a long time. Due to this we non-Tibetans are able to receive the complete teachings, enjoy and make our lives meaningful.
Now that their need is most urgent we need to be aware of how we can help - it is very important. This is what you would do if you are a sensible person, a thoughtful, intelligent person.
I have sent a message to His Holiness the Dalai Lama explaining what we will do and also requesting what prayers we should do for the achievement of success.
With much love and prayers,
Lama Zopa “

Motivated by concerns for Tibet and the Tibetan people and encouraged by the letter above from Kyabje Lama Zopa Rinpoche, some of us gathered to protest on their behalf recently.

Dorothea Williamson is a strong supporter of the Tibetan cause and had got together with Ondy to organise a Peace Vigil outside the Chinese Embassy in Manchester on Monday 7th April. During the week the Embassy is open and there is always a steady stream of visitors going to get visas, so it was hoped that an impact would be made. About 30 people joined the Vigil throughout the day, and there was a strong community feeling, with people joining us from Jamyang Leeds and elsewhere. We handed out flowers and a document stating our reasons for the protest, sang Om mani’s and recited prayers from Shantideva’s Guide to the Bodhisattva’s Way of Life.

We were, in the end, denied access to the Embassy but definitely made our presence felt. We would like to state that our grievances are not, and never have been, with the Chinese people, but with the Chinese Government. The Buddhist way of protesting, especially the chanting, had a powerful impact on one of the policemen at least, who thanked us at the end of the day for “a lovely protest”.
